The District of Vanderhoof has been meeting with representatives of various provincial Ministries and agencies to assist community members affected by the Nechako Lumber shift reduction. The participants are Ministry of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation, Ministry of Labour, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills, Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, College of New Caledonia, Community Futures, Connexus, Hubspace, Northern Development Initiative Trust, Northern Health, Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, Saikāuz First Nation, Service Canada, Sinclar Group Forest Products, Skilled Trades BC, Vanderhoof Chamber of Commerce, and WorkBC.
The Province of BC has developed supports for workers, communities and First Nations to offset economic impacts from changes in the forest sector. The goal of the meetings is to transition staff to other jobs using known employment opportunities, apply grants and funding to training programs and to help with health or mental health issues that may arise.
The next meeting is scheduled for October.
