May 15, 2024Local Government Awareness Week – Post #3

About Local Government Awareness Week

Local Government Awareness Week is an initiative of the Union of BC Municipalities designed to generate awareness and educate the public about the roles and responsibilities of local government, and encourage public participation in local government processes. Throughout this week – May 13 to 17 – the District of Vanderhoof will explore the work of our own departments, some of the legislation we are bound by, and the role of Council and the election process.

Today, we will take a look at the work done by Human Resources and Public Works.

Human Resources

The Human Resources Department provides recruitment services for the District by creating and posting job descriptions, accepting applications, shortlisting candidates, organizing interviews, hiring, and onboarding. Once staff are hired, Human Resources continues to support and assist its employees by way of compensation and benefit administration, training and development, employee engagement, recognition and wellness initiatives, disability management, supporting health and safety programs and initiatives, and providing employee and labour relations support.

Other key responsibilities include:

  • Compensation and benefit administration
  • Disability administration
  • Employee and labour relations
  • Employee engagement, recognition, and wellness
  • Health & Safety Program support
  • Recruitment and retention
  • Training and development

Public Works

The Public Works Department is responsible for the repair and maintenance of District-owned assets which include major infrastructure (roads, sewer and water systems) and municipal buildings. The department is also responsible for snow removal, sanding of roads, sidewalks, pathways, airport runways and aprons, and residential solid waste collection.

Other key responsibilities include:

  • Airport maintenance
  • Domestic water and watermain maintenance and repair
  • Fleet equipment management
  • Garbage pickup and disposal
  • Road and transportation maintenance (roads and streets, public parking lots, traffic markings, signs and equipment)
  • Sewer and storm drains
  • Street light maintenance

Please come back tomorrow for more information about your local government!
