On August 2, 2023, Sinclar Group Forest Products announced that, effective October 30, the sawmill and planer production at Nechako Lumber will be permanently reduced from two shifts to one. The decision was made due to a continuing lack of certainty around a predictable economical timber supply.
Since the announcement, District of Vanderhoof Mayor, Council and staff have been in touch with Ministry of Jobs, Economic Development, & Innovation staff regarding worker supports and options. Future meetings are planned with Ministry staff and area stakeholders to try to develop solutions in the short, medium and long term for challenges faced by the local mills. Mayor Kevin Moutray speaks for Council, saying they are aware of the impact these curtailments have on Nechako Lumber employees and contractors, residents and the community as a whole and assure Vanderhoof that they are working to do what they can to assist.
