April 22, 2026Community Input Requested: Replacement of the Cenotaph at Ferland Park

The District of Vanderhoof, in collaboration with the Royal Canadian Legion as they celebrate their 100th year of service, is beginning the process of developing a new Cenotaph for Ferland Park. As we move into the planning phase, we are seeking input from the community to help guide the details of this important memorial.

We welcome your feedback on:

  • What conflicts or historical periods should be recognized
  • What inscriptions or wording you feel should be included
  • How best to honour and preserve elements from the existing monument

Key Elements Being Considered

  • A new structure built from solid, Canadian‑sourced stone
  • Inclusion of poppies above the WWI and WWII sections
  • Etching the names from the existing bronze plaque into the new monument
  • Base inscription: “Royal Canadian Legion – 100 Years – District of Vanderhoof” with “1926 – 2026” beneath it (front and back)

Proposed Etchings

Front:  “LEST WE FORGET” [Cross symbol] “TO SERVE AS A REMEMBRANCE TO THOSE WHO SERVED IN CANADA’S MILITARY AND ALLIED FORCES IN PARTICULAR TO THOSE WHO HAVE SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES AND THOSE WHO SINCE PASSED ON”

Back: (from the original bronze plaque):  “AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING, WE WILL REMEMBER THEM”

The original bronze plaque will be preserved, and we invite suggestions on where it should be housed—such as the local museum through the historical society or returned to the Legion.

How to Participate

If you would like to be involved, please send us your name and contact information. Written comments or recommendations can also be emailed for consideration at info@vanderhoof.ca.

To ensure the stone can be ordered in time for installation before the 2026 Remembrance Day ceremony, the deadline to provide feedback is 4:30 pm May 13, 2026.

This project will be supported through community contributions and grant funding.

Thank you for helping shape this meaningful tribute to those who served.
