As several reports of incidents have been made relating to the family of deer which has been traveling around Vanderhoof, please keep some important safety measures in mind when out and about or taking your pets for a walk.
Deer are normally timid animals but are capable of defending themselves. A dog of any size will appear to be a threat, especially if the deer has fawns nearby. Ensure your dog is leashed while on a walk (required by the Animal Control Bylaw) and do not allow it to engage with a deer. Remove yourself and your dog(s) from the area calmly and quietly.
A deer will generally signal an attack by dropping its head and folding its ears back. If it attacks, protect your head with your arms and escape to shelter, like a vehicle or nearby building.
If you are involved in an incident with a deer, please report details to the 24-hour Conservation Officer Service (RAPP) line by calling 1-877-952-7277.
