About Local Government Awareness Week
Local Government Awareness Week is an initiative of the Union of BC Municipalities designed to generate awareness and educate the public about the roles and responsibilities of local government, and encourage public participation in local government processes. Throughout this week – May 12 to 16 – the District of Vanderhoof will explore the work of our own departments, some of the legislation we are bound by, and the role of Council and the election process.
Today, we will explore the provincial legislation which applies to the District’s work.
Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs
Led by Minister Ravi Kahlon, and Deputy Minister Teri Collins, the Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs supports local governments and residents in building vibrant and healthy communities and is responsible for providing British Columbians access to more affordable, safe and appropriate housing.

Local Government Act
The Local Government Act provides a foundation for local governments to address the interests and needs of their communities, provides the powers, duties and functions necessary for local governments to fulfill their purposes, and provides the flexibility to respond changing needs and circumstances of their communities.

Community Charter
The Community Charter further provides municipalities and their Councils with a framework of powers, duties and functions, the flexibility to determine the public interest of their communities, and the authority and discretion to address community needs. The Community Charter establishes principles for municipal governance, and the relationship between the municipality and the provincial government, to ensure appropriate action is taken to support the needs of the community with a cooperative approach.
