July 21 to 27, 2024 is National Drowning Prevention Week in Canada
National Drowning Prevention Week is one of the leading public education initiatives of the Lifesaving Society, with events which focus media and community attention on the drowning problem and drowning prevention. Statistics show that drowning incidents peak in the month of July, although nearly 70% of drowning victims never intended to go into the water and were often within 15 metres of safety.
Both Vanderhoof and the surrounding Bulkley-Nechako region are home to numerous bodies of open water which are used for a variety of recreational activities. To help reduce drowning incidents, we encourage residents to please:
- Take swimming lessons and basic first aid training
- Wear a properly fitted lifejacket when boating
- Do not swim or participate in aquatic activities while under the influence of recreational drugs or alcohol
- Ensure children are supervised by an adult when around open water
