The District of Vanderhoof is deeply disappointed by recent events that have taken place at Riverside Park and Campground.
On the evening of June 12, a group of intoxicated youth were observed consuming alcohol in the viewing tower, discouraging other park users from accessing the area. When approached by the campground attendant and asked to leave, one individual became aggressive and attempted to lunge at the attendant. Fortunately, others in the group intervened to prevent further escalation. Riverside Park is intended as a safe, family-friendly space used daily by residents and visitors alike—not as a venue for underage drinking and disruptive behavior.
Later that night, between approximately 3:00 and 4:30 a.m., a series of thefts and acts of vandalism occurred throughout the campground. Items were stolen from 16–18 campsites. A locked camper was broken into while the occupant was sleeping. A vehicle was also broken into. The washrooms and laundry room were vandalized, as well as other areas of the park.
We do not yet know whether these two incidents are connected, but both are deeply concerning and unacceptable.
Riverside Campground is a valued destination for visitors who come to enjoy our natural surroundings, contribute to our local economy, and experience the hospitality of our community. It is regrettable that some may now associate their stay in Vanderhoof with these troubling events.
Anyone with information about these incidents is urged to contact the Vanderhoof RCMP at 250-567-2222.
