General local elections (and by-elections) are the most direct way for the public to influence their local government by determining the individuals who then make decisions and govern on their behalf. General local elections in B.C. are held every four years on the third Saturday in October. The next general local election will be held October 17, 2026.
WHERE AND WHEN TO VOTE
Eligible voters may cast their ballot at the St. Joseph Church gymnasium at 2980 Burrard Avenue on the Advance Voting Day , Wednesday, October 7, 2026 or on General Voting Day, Saturday, October 17, 2026 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Voters will also be able to vote in the School District 91 School Trustee and the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako Area Director elections on the same dates/times/location (but following a separate registration process).

Nomination documents may be submitted from 9:00 am Tuesday, September 1 to 4:00 pm Friday, September 11, 2026 to the Chief Election Officer in person at the Municipal Office (160 Connaught Street) or by email to corporate@vanderhoof.ca. The Municipal Office is closed on Labour Day, Monday, September 7; nomination documents will not be accepted on this day. Documents will not be received in person prior to or after these dates and times. Documents emailed outside these times will not be considered to be submitted.

Campaign Expense Limits
Campaign Expense limits are set by Elections BC. In accordance with the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act, for the 2026 General Local Election, the following expense limits for candidates during the campaign period (September 19 to October 17) apply:
| Mayor: | $12,323.78 |
| Councillors: | $6,161.89 |
Also in accordance with the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act , the third-party directed advertising expense limit for the 2026 General Local Election is $924.28.

Who are you voting for?
Candidates will be listed here once candidate nomination documents are submitted during the Nomination Period (September 1 to 11, 2026).
Who can vote?
Voting rights in BC are granted to citizens based on residency or property ownership. There is no corporate or business vote in local elections.
Resident* Elector – you live in Vanderhoof
To vote in the election, you must:
- be 18 years old or older on October 17, 2026
- be a Canadian citizen
- have lived in BC since March 16, 2026
- be a resident of the District of Vanderhoof
- be legally allowed to vote (you cannot be disqualified under the law)
Non-resident Property Elector – you own property in Vanderhoof but live elsewhere in BC
To vote in the election, you must:
- not qualify to vote as a resident of the District of Vanderhoof (Resident Elector, above)
- be 18 years of age or older on October 17, 2026
- be a Canadian citizen
- have lived in BC since March 16, 2026
- have been the registered owner of your Vanderhoof property since September 16, 2026
- be legally allowed to vote (you cannot be disqualified under the law)
If the property has more than one owner, only one owner may vote, and they must have written consent from a majority of the other registered owners listed on the title.
If a property is owned by a company, numbered company or trust, no one can vote as a non-resident property elector for that property. If the property title lists both a company or trust and an individual, no one is eligible to vote for that property.
If you plan to vote in person as a non-resident property elector, it’s recommended you complete a Non-Resident Property Elector Registration Form before voting day.
When you vote, you will need to bring:
- Identification required to vote (see below)
- Proof you own the property
- Written Consent from the majority of the other registered owners (if there are any), confirming you are the one person designated to vote for the property

Students:If you move to attend school, you can choose to be considered a resident of either:

Mail Ballot Voting
To vote by mail ballot, complete and return the Request for Mail Ballot and Non-Resident Property Elector Registration Form (if applicable) before 4:00 p.m. Thursday, October 15, 2026 to the Deputy Chief Election Officer. If someone is picking up your mail ballot package for you, they must bring with them a completed Declaration of Person Obtaining a Mail Ballot Package on Behalf of an Elector.
You are responsible for ensuring your mail ballot is received no later than 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2026 (close of voting on General Voting Day).
Identification Required to Vote
- Two (2) pieces of identification(at least one with a signature)
- Picture identification is not necessary
- ID must prove both residency and identity
